PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE AND SCHOOL SAFETY by Dave Bird The Ontario Ministry of Education P/PM 145 (Progressive Discipline and Promoting Positive Student Behaviour) re-affirms the Ontario Ministry's current commitment to building and sustaining a safe learning and teaching environment wherein appropriate and positive student behaviours are actively promoted and supported. All Ontario School Boards must now immediately develop and implement such specific progressive discipline policies. ASCD members have recently reported that more than ever they need to become most informed about classroom management and discipline strategies (more so even than about assessment and grading practices). Not coincidentally, they have also reported that education's most worrisome trend is ever-increasing school violence. Our upcoming Progressive Discipline conference will address these concerns. Join us, in Mississauga , on Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 when Alfie Kohn guides us through a full morning session during which he will invite us to re-consider assumptions about any continued need for older, more traditional disciplinary models. During the afternoon conference participants and teams will then have the opportunity to attend one of three breakout sessions led by Philip Hall (Motivating Oppositional and Defiant Students), Roberta Richin (Connecting Character to Conduct), and Stephen Wessler (Eliminating Bullying, Hate and Harassment). |
