Developing Partnerships in Education
Parent and Community Engagement in School and Student Success
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 - Guelph ON
The Ontario Ministry of Education has been urging a new partnership among all stakeholders in our education sector, based on their new three R’s: Respect, Responsibility, and Results.
Recognizing the vital role parents and the larger community play in developing education and the success of our schools, the Ontario Ministry of Education has determined that parent involvement is no longer just desirable: it is absolutely essential. Good schools become better schools through stronger connections with their parents. Research confirms that stronger connections increase student achievement, reduce absenteeism, improve behaviour, and restore parental confidence.
With the support of the new Office of Parent Engagement, the new Parent Involvement Policy now requires successful parent participation as a key provincial outcome for every school and school board in our province. Parent Involvement Committees will be directly linked to Directors of Education and to School Board Trustees, both to provide parent advice and to ensure authentic parent engagement. Of course this engagement can occur only within the context of a suitably effective environment, support system and set of attitudes.
